The
next destination for our 20th
annual Beach Sculpture Festival was the lovely Bracelet Bay in Mumbles.
Although usually a quieter beach than the more popular Langland and Caswell
beaches around the coast, today Bracelet Bay was extremely popular with
lots of families and groups eager to work with the artists to create some
beautiful and interesting marine inspired sculptures. With lovely sunshine
all day, people kept arriving for the drop-in workshops with a strong biodiversity
theme. With a high tide at the beginning of the event day, the little beach
was full to the brim on the remaining sand but everyone worked with the
tide and there was a real excitement and buzz atmosphere!
Everyone
was very involved using the techniques, processes and development of ideas
that the artists shared at the festival.
We loved making our sculpture all together. Children enjoyed chatting with the artists and making decisions on how to create their sculptures. We learnt about marine life whilst at the festival. Events like this are absolutely so worthwhile and we have all enjoyed it. Diolch yn fawr! A gorgeous Starfish is created by this family. After working
with guidance from the artists on a sculpture there was confidence to
make their own. Also many stayed virtually all day! 'What a welcoming and inspiring space you've made here for everyone - thank you!' Oystercatcher fun using shells and pebbles on Bracelet Bay. |
'An awesome day being creative in a stunning location. Thank you.' Participants are often hesitant when they first arrive but with support from the artists, they very quickly become involved in their own journey of creating. They were involved in sculpting and searching for their own found shoreline treasures to enhance their artworks. Their happiness of involvement was evident on their faces and the stories they told. A wonderful communal project with a creative atmosphere - working together to make beautiful art with positive encouragement and guidance from the artists! Diolch! Bracelet bay has an abundance of many varieties of stones, whilst participants were interested at inspecting their formations; they resisted taking them home. Little seabirds are made from coloured pebbles with seaweed tales nestled into the rocks at Bracelet Bay! 'It was a great event that encouraged children to be more creative.' Our participants' creativity and well-being was enhanced through the festival workshops. Each year there appears to be a deeper appreciation of our exciting environmental arts festival with more people wanting to understand the natural world. So many families and individuals the artists worked with were so grateful for an activity that was creative, nature based, educational, that the whole family could do together and was free. A strong biodiversity education was delivered at the event while everyone was having such creative fun in the sunshine.

'It was good fun and we loved being creative on the beach. Thank you!' Participants we engrossed on the processes of creation all day and they were spread out all over the shoreline collecting and returning to their chosen the art space. The beach was an eclectic mix of small, large and 3D sculptures each one skilfully crafted for a precious beach memory. Something fishy going on with these delighted youngsters! 'It was a real creative opportunity for all the family!'
An Oystercatcher bird sculpture is created from the wonderful coloured pebbles found at Bracelet Bay. 'Fantastic environmental art event. Loved the use of shells and pebbles!' The activity really inspired children to look carefully at their surroundings and use their imaginations to make their sculptures as well as building an empathy with marine species!
