The second location in our annual Beach Sculpture Festival each year is the beautiful Oxwich Bay which is a large sandy beach with lots on offer – sea, surf, dunes and salt marsh. Flags and displays were arranged by the artists in the morning sunshine across the beach to welcome people attending the festival. Oxwich Beach has a mixture of sand and shale that can be used for making sculptures. There are also limestone stones and shells that can be used as textures, patterns and outlines of the marine animals that the festival participants made with the artists. With the sun shining down, the beach was soon filled with people and lots of those were keen to take part in our artist led workshops at the Beach Sculpture Festival.

The artists were very informative and the children loved learning from them. They enjoyed making their turtle and finding about the species. We learnt that sea creatures can choke on plastic and how important it is to not leave litter on the beach. The children were learning as well as playing. It was a great couple of hours spent at the festival.

A beautiful large scale sand lizard was sculpted out of sand and decorated with shells. The species once extinct in Wales has been reintroduced and the sculpture gave the opportunity to discuss this interesting little creature that frequents sand dunes on Gower.

The event gave children knowledge of art and the environment. The festival encouraged creativity for children using local features.

We had a great time at the festival. We loved thinking about patterns, shapes, sizes and designs! The festival was great fun and very educational too as we learnt all about different marine species. A fantastic activity that the children can do again themselves!

The artists inspired the young and old alike with a festival that will shape our children's future and aspirations.

Lots of the participants had been to the festival before as they thought it was a great way to ground the children in the natural world at the start of the holidays and to keep them creating and learning all summer. They even took away new ideas!

These teenagers were delighted with their ray sculpture, the making of which entertained them for a few hours.

The artists gave workshop participants inspiration and advice to help achieve the perfect look for the sculptures.

Environmental Art Events like this are great as they get people together to learn about both art and the environment.

A fabulous activity for the children. The artists were really helpful and informative - so encouraging throughout the day. A five star event! Many thanks!

Great to have such creative activities at the beach!

Whilst at the festival we learnt about conservation, marine life and art!

Such lovely beach fun for all the family that can't be underestimated. We learnt lots of new skills and really enjoyed the event again

The festival gave us more creative ideas of what to make on the beach and it was such fun!

Learning through play encourages creativity and an enhanced sense of well being.

A very creative day was enjoyed by everyone! Parents shared their happiness of being together in the beach environment with their children away from screens whilst taking part in the sculpting activities. Participants enjoyed learning new art skills and techniques that they can use in the future when at the beach.

THANK YOU TO OUR KIND SPONSORS BELOW:

Fabulous fun - thank you!

With each sculpture made we discussed facts about the creature. Also resources and information was at hand.

A Dragon Fish was an interesting sculpture to create using a piece of driftwood, sand, broken shells and seaweed for a forked tongue.

We found out about different materials to use for sculptures on the beach.

Participants asked lots of questions with regards to their chosen marine animal for sand sculpting - they also enquired about items found on the shore line such as cuttlefish, and mermaid's purse.

The artists gave us lots of ideas and help with making the sculptures and choosing materials

Some fabulous creations!

Participants enjoyed exploring the shoreline for shells, feathers, sticks and stones to enhance or build their chosen shoreline/marine creature.

Environmental art events like this inspire children to be more creative.

We look forward to this event every summer!

The whole beach looks amazing!
