The
artists arrived at beautiful Oxwich beach for the second day of the 20th
annual Beach Sculpture FestivaI. With fine weather and hot sunshine predicted,
the beach was already beginning to fill up so the artists set up the festival
site with flags, displays and species information posts in readiness for
the workshops. Oxwich beach is a lovely curved
bay with a mixture of sand and shale, as well as there being some interesting
shaped and coloured rocks which are ideal to use in making and decorating
of the marine animal inspired sculptures. Many of the festival goers were
seasoned participants who had previously attended and enjoyed the event
as well as many new eager workshop participants. Everyone was very keen
to create some beautiful sculptures with the help of the artists to adorn
the beautiful shore. The sun shone all day and everyone enjoyed a very happy
festival day.
'We loved making our turtle and finding about the species. We learnt that sea creatures can choke on plastic bags and how important it is to not leave litter on the beach.' Marine and seashore related creations were inspired by the shore line of the Gower, with related visuals. People shared their knowledge of the seas whilst interacting with the information placards scattered in the creation zone of the Beach Sculpture Festival. 'The girls have been looking forward to this festival since last summer!' 'Our creativity was enhanced through the festival as we used different techniques and hunted out the perfect materials! We learnt about some endangered species, their habitats and different materials on the beach. Events like this are wonderful for kids to discover and appreciate the world around them, away from distractions and to let their imaginations run free!'
'Both children were able to express themselves with the help of the artists. Lots of fun and very creative!'
The festival brought people together and got them talking to each other. People were really comfortable interacting with other participants, sharing ideas, helping each other. A few participants were inspired to get creative on the shoreline and built independently, alongside the Beach Sculpture Festival

A beautiful Oystercatcher bird made from an assortment of colourful materials was one of the lovely sculptures on display on the beach.
'The festival gave us new ideas for beach fun! Free, fun for all ages and gets everyone to connect with nature!' Participants were enthusiastic to get involved, many already had ideas of the sea creatures they wanted to sculpt and build in the sand, larger groups were able to organise themselves to all work together, some foraging, others building. They were motivated to have a go to construct and collect and decorate their creature with the advice of the artists. Some lovely family memories were made through the making of the sculptures too! 'A great morning sculpting at Oxwich! Thanks for such a great time' 'Great to have such creative activities at the beach!' 'Such lovely outdoor fun for all the family that can't be overated. We learnt lots of new skills and really enjoyed the event again'
'Such a a lovely idea! The sculptures look amazing! Thanks!' 'The whole beach looks amazing!'

Learning through play encourages creativity and an enhanced sense of well being. 'Such a wonderful activity to be part of. The children were completely absorbed and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!' 'Back again after last year - can't wait!!!' 'The festival is a great idea. The boys really enjoyed themselves'
'The artists gave us lots of ideas and help with forming the sculptures and choosing materials' 'Some fabulous creations!'
|
'We had a great time at the festival. We enjoyed thinking about patterns, shapes, sizes and designs! The event was great fun and very educational too as we learnt about different marine species. A brilliant activity that the children can do again themselves!'
|
'Some great positive feedback and ideas from the artists. We loved all the information posts - i.e. scallops have 100 eyes! The festival encourages lots of people to engage with the natural environment and my girls look forward to this event every summer!' 'Our children enjoyed finding out about the local marine life from the artists whilst making their sculptures. It's great to find out these things and appreciate where we live. We all enjoyed being creative with the help, support and knowledge of the artists. It was brilliant. Thankyou!'
|
Everyone (from youngest to oldest) seemed to get something positive out of the festival. There was an enthusiasm to finish the art to a high standard and there were many ideas flowing to create further sculptures. Also the artists noticed there was a real interest in admiring other people's sculptures on the beach. A
very creative day was enjoyed by everyone! The next stop on the festival
tour was Port Eynon.To
